Civil society organisation (CSO), Fortify Rights, has criticised the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) following the leak of an official ASEAN document that proposes appeasing the Myanmar junta and maintaining the status quo in Myanmar.

CSO Progressive Voice has joined with other organisations in condemning the appointment of a Myanmar junta general, General Tun Aung, to the chair of the of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Air Chiefs Conference (AACC).

Indonesian President Joko Widodo has warned the Myanmar junta must not be allowed to hold ASEAN hostage and foreshadowed a tougher approach under his chairmanship of the bloc next year after his bid to have the junta excluded from all high-level meetings failed on Friday.
