The US and its allies Canada, the UK and Australia have imposed fresh sanctions on Myanmar, adding to pressure on the military regime, two years since it overthrew the civilian government led by Aung San Suu Kyi in a coup.

As Myanmar enters its third year under military rule on February 1, the junta forces’ onslaught against any perceived opposition—whether trade unionists, rights activists, factory workers, or members of the People’s Defense Force—has caused “widespread fear and grave human rights violations” in the country.

The U.S. and its allies have imposed new sanctions on the Myanmar regime two years after the coup that took power in the country. Energy officials and members of the junta are among those targeted.
