Recent moves by the Central Bank of Myanmar to promote cooperation between military-owned lenders and their Russian counterparts suggest the junta is seeking more than financial ties to the Kremlin and may be brokering a back channel for arms deals, analysts said Wednesday.

Burma was a theatre of war in southeast Asia during World War II. The former British colony once served as a major hotspot during the period allied forces held off Japanese forces until the latter surrendered in 1945.

Russia’s biggest truck manufacturer met with junta leadership last week to discuss the production of its vehicles in Myanmar, a move that could “deepen” the country’s relationship with the coup regime, according to advocacy group Justice for Myanmar (JFM).

The head of Russian truck giant Kamaz visited Myanmar last week for talks with the terrorist Myanmar military junta to produce trucks in Myanmar, and will finalise an agreement by June.

Finnish technology giant Wärtsilä Corporation in partnership with sanctioned arms broker, Myanmar Chemical and Machinery (MCM) won two contracts from the junta to construct and operate two-hybrid gas and solar power plants in Myingyan and Magway.
