Following last year's 1 February military coup in Myanmar, the US Treasury in April imposed multiple targeted sanctions directed against the junta, including banning dealings with Myanmar Timber Enterprise (MTE).  The state-owned company is the sole authority overseeing the export of timber selling it through auctions to private companies.

Myanmar’s junta raised its commercial tax on internet services on January 8, with the new policies in place until at least March 31.

American companies continue to import teakwood from military-ruled Myanmar in apparent violation of U.S. sanctions, an advocacy group said in a report released yesterday.

U.S. timber companies imported nearly 1,600 metric tons of teak from Myanmar last year, circumventing sanctions and channeling millions of dollars in revenue to the country’s junta, according to a new report.

A report on global trade data showed U.S. companies were still buying teak wood from Myanmar as recently as last month despite the government placing sanctions on the country last year after its military seized power.

US companies continue to import teak, a valuable hardwood, from Myanmar despite sanctions imposed by Washington following the military takeover of the country last year, according to a watchdog group.

Since the military coup in February 2021, the US has imported 1,565 tonnes of teak from Myanmar regardless of the sanctions that were put in place shortly after the coup.

American companies are still importing teak from Myanmar despite sanctions imposed after the military seized power last year, a report based on trade data said Tuesday.
