Telenor has been warned that the sale of its Myanmar business will endanger the Norwegian telecoms company’s 18mn customers in the south-east Asian nation by putting their personal data within reach of the junta.

According to the Justice for Myanmar pressure group, the Norwegian telecom group Telenor is selling its Telenor Myanmar subsidiary to the M1 Group, while covering up the M1 Group’s part ownership by a Myanmar military-linked company.

Norwegian telecoms company Telenor, a leading operator in Myanmar serving more than 18 million users, has complied with multiple requests from the military junta for sensitive user data since last year’s coup, according to industry sources.
