Más de 250 ONG pidieron este martes a la Interpol que impida que la junta militar birmana represente a Birmania (Myanmar) en la Asamblea General que se celebra desde hoy y hasta el jueves en la ciudad turca de Estambul.

After Myanmar’s armed forces seized control of the country in February, the Southeast Asian nation was thrown into chaos. At least 1,000 civilians were killed in demonstrations, and thousands of others fled to neighboring India and Thailand.

On February 1 this year, the military overthrew the Aung San Suu Kyi-led national government and seized power in Myanmar, reversing more than a decade of democratic reforms. In the last eight months since, Myanmar’s junta has killed at least 1,243 anti-military protesters and detained 9,000 others in the wake of a popular uprising following the military coup.

Fredag blev Danny Fenster, den amerikanske redaktør for Frontier Myanmar, Danwatchs samarbejdsmedie i Myanmar, idømt 11 års fængsel af landets militærjunta. Men nu er han blevet løsladt og på vej hjem til USA via Qatar. Det skriver ngo’en Justice for Myanmar på Twitter.
