The security situation in Myanmar, a significant regional gas producing nation, continues to deteriorate with the military junta that seized power early last year stepping up air and ground strikes in Loikaw in Kayah state.

Attacks by Myanmar’s military against anti-coup ethnic militias continue.Last weekend, the military attacked Loikaw, Kayah state. Some 60,000 people fled the city, whose population had swelled to 90,000, seeking refuge in Shan State.

Following last year's 1 February military coup in Myanmar, the US Treasury in April imposed multiple targeted sanctions directed against the junta, including banning dealings with Myanmar Timber Enterprise (MTE).  The state-owned company is the sole authority overseeing the export of timber selling it through auctions to private companies.

Myanmar’s junta raised its commercial tax on internet services on January 8, with the new policies in place until at least March 31.
