A top US government official urged Singapore to help restrict the Myanmar military’s access to foreign funds during a three-day trip to Southeast Asia this week.

Myanmar’s military regime may soon find it more difficult to access its financial assets in Singapore, following discussions between authorities there and US officials on how to partner effectively to wield the city state’s financial leverage over the junta.

FINANCIAL regulators in Singapore said they have taken steps aimed at mitigating risks from entities that have business dealings with Myanmar, in response to queries from The Business Times on a legal memorandum published by human rights groups.

The Myanmar junta is leaning on telecoms companies to activate spyware on citizens’ phones, prompting a major European firm to pull out of the country amid fears it would put activists’ lives at risk if it complied.

The precipitous collapse of the Myanmar kyat, which has lost more than 60 percent of its value in recent weeks, is the latest sign of the plight facing the country’s economy, which has already been pushed to the verge of total collapse.

Political reforms in Myanmar started in November 2010 followed by the release of the opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, and ended by the coup d’état in February 2021.
