A former member of the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Independent International Fact Finding Mission on Myanmar has criticized the United Nations Security Council for failing to enforce an arms embargo on Burma’s military.

Given the political climate, anything that contributes to the empowerment of Myanmar's military regime at the moment is a cause for concern. And if that happens to be the means to extract and decrypt information from computers and phones, that's a red signal in ways more than one.

Myanmar security forces appear to be using surveillance technology sourced from European and North American companies against civilians who have spent months protesting against a military coup.

Inside the interrogation room of a Myanmar detention center, what Myat remembers most clearly is looking up from the floor and everything being green. The officials questioning him sat on green plastic chairs behind a green table on a thin green carpet. Myat, a Burmese student in his mid-20s, was arrested in late March in Yangon.

A febbraio 2021, la giunta militare del Myanmar ha ripreso il controllo del Paese con un colpo di Stato. L’esercito, anche noto con il nome di Tatmadaw, ha incarcerato i principali leader del partito di maggioranza, represso nel sangue le proteste, arrestato i manifestanti e gettato il Paese in una guerra civile che è sempre più grave.

Nonostante l’embargo, nei documenti finanziari dell’amministrazione birmana sono riportate molte aziende occidentali. Fra queste c’è anche la SecurCube che è italiana e produce un potente sistema di monitoraggio per le frequenze radio.
