An international consortium has suspended a $1.5-billion hydropower dam project in Myanmar in response to last month's military coup, consortium member Electricite de France, a French utility, said Sunday.

State utility says it respects local people's fundamental rights, so it has stopped work on the Shweli 3 dam, a $1.5-billion hydropower project in northern Shan State, as the toll of civilians slain by the military and police tops 230 and nationwide protests drag on.

Plus d’un mois après le coup d’Etat survenu en Birmanie, EDF a annoncé dimanche avoir suspendu un projet de barrage hydroélectrique dans le pays. Le groupe français « confirme que le projet est suspendu », selon un porte-parole. Les ONG Info Birmanie et JFM ont salué cette décision dans un communiqué.

French power group EDF confirmed on Friday it has suspended the development of a hydropower project in Myanmar after a military junta ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in a coup on Feb. 1 and seized power in the country.

Police in Myanmar Friday arrested two journalists covering the trial of a civilian official ousted in last month’s military takeover as brutal crackdowns on anti-coup protests killed at least 10, sources in Myanmar told RFA.
