Washington has imposed sanctions on two adult children of the Myanmar junta leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. The sanctions are the United States latest response to the Feb. 1 coup by the military and their subsequent use of lethal force against peaceful protestors calling for the reinstatement of the democratically-elected civilian government.

The Biden administration has announced a new package of sanctions to squeeze the finances of Myanmar’s military junta, as it seeks to strengthen its response to last month’s coup.

The United States on Wednesday imposed sanctions on two children of Myanmar’s military leader Min Aung Hlaing and six companies they control in response to the military’s Feb. 1 coup and the killing of protesters since the takeover.

Since Myanmar’s military overturned a democratically elected government on February 1, millions of people within the country have shown courage, discipline, and creativity by protesting the military coup.
