A European Union-funded app designed to help voters get information about Myanmar’s November 8 election risks inflaming “racism and religious nationalism” and is complicit in erasing the Rohingya’s identity, activists have said.

Some of Canada’s largest public investors hold shares in companies that the United Nations has accused of doing business with entities owned by the military in Myanmar, where the armed forces stand accused of committing genocide.

It is always difficult to predict the outcome of any election, but in the run-up to Myanmar’s general election, which is scheduled to be held on Nov. 8, most political observers tend to agree on three major points.

A recent order led to the blocking of the ‘Justice for Myanmar’ website which was launched this year to expose the corruption and dubious business ties of the military.

On Aug. 27, all mobile operators and service providers in Myanmar received a directive from the government to block the Justice for Myanmar website for purportedly spreading fake news.

An online petition started by the International Campaign for the Rohingya seeks to collect 12,800 signatories as public support for the campaign to end the partnership between a major alcohol producer and the military in Myanmar.

Some of the websites the government has blocked are critical but credible sources of information, such as news outlets Narinjara and Development Media Group, both based in Rakhine, and activist group Justice For Myanmar. Although the government may see this as combatting disinformation, others view it as a violation of freedom of speech and a free press.
