The Myanmar government is undermining freedom of expression ahead of the upcoming general elections by imposing severe restrictions on candidates, voters, and the general public, said ARTICLE 19.

An Amnesty International investigation has exposed how international businesses are linked to the financing of Myanmar’s military, including many units directly responsible for crimes under international law and other human rights violations.

Former President Thein Sein and his ministers from the previous government hold shares in a massive conglomerate that funds “the military’s international crimes” with “secret slush funds,” activists have confirmed.

Leaked official documents analysed by the global rights watchdog revealed Myanmar's military received 16 billion USD as dividend out of a total 18 billion USD from shares of Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited (MEHL) between 1990 and 2011. The military continues to receive the benefits as of now.
