The head of Myanmar’s military-backed government has arrived in Thailand for an official visit that could serve as a major stepping stone in his effort to win political legitimacy more than five years after seizing power from an elected civilian government.

Min Aung Hlaing arrived in Thailand for talks, business meetings and bilateral agreements. The trip has intensified criticism that regional engagement is legitimising Myanmar's military rule.

Myanmar junta chief Min Aung Hlaing will discuss investment, trade, border stability, and energy cooperation during his two-day visit to Thailand beginning on August 6, according to the regime, with Thailand’s continued role in Myanmar’s gas sector expected to be high on the agenda.
