In response to repeated calls for them to cut ties with the military regime in Myanmar, energy giants Total of France and Chevron of the US on Wednesday announced they have suspended some payments to their joint venture with a state-owned company controlled by the coup leaders.

Oil and gas majors Total of France and Chevron of the U.S. announced on Tuesday that they will suspend some cash payments linked to Moattama Gas Transportation Company, a Myanmar gas pipeline joint venture between three foreign energy companies and state-owned energy producer Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise.

The French energy company Total SA says its shareholders have voted to suspend payments of dividends to stakeholders in the joint venture company running a gas pipeline in Myanmar.

French energy giant Total will withhold tens of millions of dollars in cash dividend payments to the Myanmar junta from a very profitable gas pipeline company part-owned by the military-­controlled Myanma Oil and gas Enterprise.
