Five years after the Myanmar military’s coup attempt, the people of Myanmar continue to resist through extraordinary courage, determination, and sacrifice.

Despite the horror inflicted by the junta through its relentless violence, repression and nationwide terror campaign, the people’s revolution for a federal democracy grounded in peace and justice for all endures.

The junta’s attempts to manufacture false legitimacy have failed. Its sham election has been met with a widespread boycott and protests by the people of Myanmar, both inside the country and in the diaspora, often at great personal risk.

Meanwhile, the junta has failed to gain territorial control as resistance forces have advanced across the country.

After five years of attempting to seize control, it is clear that the illegal and illegitimate military junta has no mandate to govern the country, from the Myanmar people or international community.

Against overwhelming odds, the people of Myanmar are making a collective effort to build a federal democratic future from the ground up.

Across ethnic, religious and regional lines, the people are establishing democratic institutions, mutual aid networks and systems of people-led governance beyond military control.

Clearly, it is the people of Myanmar, not the generals, who are shaping Myanmar’s future.

Yet, the junta’s campaign of terror continues to be sustained by its allied authoritarian governments, multinational corporations, international banks and Myanmar cronies that fund, arm, equip and train the military, aiding and abetting its international crimes, enabled by global inaction.

These companies and cronies are backing and profiting from the same military and generals that have, for decades, perpetrated atrocities against ethnic minorities, including genocide against the Rohingya. Since 2021, they have committed war crimes and crimes against humanity against the people of Myanmar nationwide with total impunity. All those responsible for these crimes must be held accountable.

Justice For Myanmar spokesperson Yadanar Maung says: "Five years on, the Myanmar junta has failed to break the will of the people to resist its tyranny and system of repression. It has neither legitimacy nor mandate, and can only resort to violence against the people.

"Now, the junta has orchestrated a so-called ‘election’ that is nothing but a sham, which cannot fool the Myanmar people and must not fool foreign governments.

"Governments must reject the junta’s sham election and its results and impose coordinated, targeted sanctions to halt the flow of funds, arms, equipment and aviation fuel that sustain the junta’s terror campaign.

"Companies and investors must end their complicity by withdrawing funds and ties from the military, its related businesses and cronies.

"As the resistance enters its sixth year, the world must stand in solidarity with Myanmar people’s efforts to dismantle the military cartel and build a federal democratic future."
