Feb. 5, 2021, Myanmar: Justice For Myanmar congratulates Kirin’s decision to cut ties with military-owned conglomerate Myanma Economic Holdings Limited. Kirin has been a major financial supporter of the Myanmar military and has made the right decision by ending that relationship today, following the military’s illegitimate Feb 1 coup.

Yadanar Maung spokesperson says: “Kirin’s bold and timely move to cut ties sends a strong message to the Myanmar military that their illegitimate and brutal coup and continued genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity will not be tolerated. Kirin’s actions support the democratic struggle of the Myanmar people for democracy, peace, justice and accountability. We appreciate that Kirin has finally listened to the voices of the Myanmar people and made the right decision by cutting ties. We now call on Kirin to encourage other companies to follow suit, in order to support the peoples’ efforts to resume democratisation and civilian administration in Myanmar and for a sustainable peace. We call on all companies that remain in business with the military regime to follow Kirin’s example and immediately cut ties, including POSCO and Adani Ports. The business interests of top generals is a motivation for the coup so business has a crucial role to play now by cutting ties.”

Justice For Myanmar calls on the international community to impose targeted sanctions on Myanmar military businesses, their directors and significant business associates. The military’s businesses interests bankroll their brutal and illegal actions. Decisive action is needed now.
