Lee Tih Shih
With his ageless, airbrushed online portraits, rigid posture, impressive degrees, and dynastic family, Lee Tih Shih may call to mind the male lead in Crazy Rich Asians—or Dorian Gray, depending on how you interpret the contradictory details of his life.
On the one hand, he comes from a long line of philanthropists: his family’s foundation, Lee Foundation, is the largest private charitable foundation in Singapore and Lee Tih Shih sits on the board.
On the other hand, he’s a major shareholder of Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC), a bank that operates in Myanmar and continues to profit from dealings with the illegitimate Myanmar military junta. OCBC enables this brutal junta to move money, transact business and procure arms that it uses to slaughter innocent people.
How Lee Tih Shih manages this glaring moral contradiction is a question only he and the board of Lee Foundation—which is itself a shareholder and beneficiary of OCBC—can know.
OCBC has also provided services to Myanmar cronies and arms brokers, including Star Sapphire Group of Companies and Htoo Group.
