Robert Kuok
Meet Robert Kuok, the richest man in Malaysia.
Not only does Mr. Kuok own a residence in ‘the wealthiest neighbourhood on earth’, he also allegedly owns the world’s most expensive yacht — the History Supreme—with a gold and platinum interior, T-Rex bone on the wall of the master bedroom, and a $4.8 billion price tag.
This extraordinary wealth comes at the cost of a clean conscience: Mr Kuok has been doing business with the Myanmar military for 30 years, despite its relentless acts of aggression and brutality against the people of Myanmar. In 1996—the same year that the military brutally crushed student democracy protests—the Kuok Group signed a land lease for Sule Square, which opened in 2017 under management of Shangri-La Asia.
Neither Shangri-La Asia nor the Myanmar military have disclosed details of the land lease payments the Myanmar army receives. Given the high value of the location—described on Shangri-La’s website as ‘unparalleled’ with views of ‘historic Yangon… lush tropical trees and shining pagodas’—payments could be substantial.
Despite Shangri-La Hotel and Resorts’ dealings with war criminals, Shangri-La Group remains on the Hong Kong and Singapore stock exchanges.
